ABC’s ‘Private Practice‘ (Thursdays at 10/9c) will delve a bit further into Addison’s past during November sweeps when viewers meet the good doctor’s not-so-great father. Filling the role of “the Captain,” as Mr. Montgomery is called, will be ‘7th Heaven‘ alum Stephen Collins, I have learned exclusively.

The relationship between Addison and the affluent Montgomery clan’s patriarch is tenuous at best, as the result of decades of tension. For example, it was revealed this past February that the Captain used his “father-daughter time” with an adolescent Addison as a pretense to carry on an affair with his secretary.

Collins is perhaps best known to TV fans from his run on ’7th Heaven’ where he played the Reverend Eric Camden. His big-screen credits include ‘Because I Said So‘ and ‘The First Wives Club.’

On ‘Private Practice’ Collins steps in for Barry Bostwick (‘Spin City‘), who originally had been tapped to play the Captain but ran into a scheduling conflict.
