By most accounts, ‘Heroes‘ is still in a free fall.

Remember the chills you got when you first heard, ‘Save the cheerleader, save the world’? And then nothing happened. Now the cheerleader is trying to save the show…with a same-sex smooch.

On Monday, they go there in an episode called ‘Hysterical Blindess,’ in which Hayden Panettiere’s Claire Bennet has a girl-on-girl kiss with her college roommate Gretchen, played by ‘Californication’ wild child Madeline Zima.

Sexy move or cheap shot?

What used to be taboo TV is now considered nothing more than a ratings-grabbing stunt. The provocative plot point pretty much jumped the shark with moody Marissa Cooper’s (Mischa Barton) sapphic smooch with Olivia Wilde back on ‘The O.C.’ These days everyone from Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox (‘Dirt’) to ‘Desperate Housewives’ Gaby and Susan are doing it. Even Marge Simpson has had a lesbian kiss!

But if you think having Claire Bear go all experimental with a girlfriend is a new level of desperation for a sagging show, blame Hayden Panettiere herself.

Panettiere says it was all her idea.

“I kinda threw it out there,” the 20-year-old actress recently said to the media. “The writers put you in relationships and I was like, ‘Can I just be with a girl or something?’ Let’s do that.”

I’m sure every fanboy left still watching this show agrees, ‘LET’S DO THAT.’
