Alan Thicke is fast eclipsing that mysterious goat as the unofficial poster child for ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ having booked an appearance in this season’s seventh episode, I’ve learned.

Thicke first guested on the CBS comedy in April 2008, playing the “Father” in Robin Sparkles’ “Sandcastles in the Sand” music video.

More recently, the Ontario-born actor lent his mug to a series of “error messages” at the (surprisingly Safe For Work) CanadianSexActs.org website created for the March 2009 episode “Old King Clancy.”

This time around, however, Thicke will be outright playing himself – and in a manner reminiscent of Neil Patrick Harris in the ‘Harold & Kumar‘ pics.

Catch Thicke in classic episodes of Growing Pains

How is it that the ‘Growing Pains’ dad crosses paths with the ‘Mother’ gang? Details are sketchy, but it will be a sizeable guest-star role as Thicke finds himself – along with another TV icon – swept up in a sprawling misadventure marshaled by Lily.

In one exasperating moment, he is even prompted to say, “Listen, I hate to play the ‘I am Alan Thicke’ card, but….”

You’ll have to wait and see if that extricates him from his most unusual predicament.

In other ‘Mother’ news, ‘The O.C.‘ alumna Rachel Bilson has been tapped to guest star in the comedy’s 100th episode – perhaps as the titular oneday momma? EW’s Michael Ausiello reports.

‘How I Met Your Mother’ airs Mondays at 8/7c.
