Does Heather Locklear matter to today’s TV viewers?
The producers of the new ‘Melrose Place’ think so. They convinced La Locklear to reprise the role that made America love to hate her.
“The bitch is back!” declared the CW’s press release.
Indeed, Locklear will be returning as Amanda Woodward starting November 17.
“We’re ecstatic to have the chance to bring Amanda Woodward back to ‘Melrose Place,’” executive producers Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer said. “Heather’s involvement in the show is something we’ve been working on for some time as we couldn’t imagine creating and producing this show without the iconic character’s inclusion.”
Or without the ratings she brought the original.
The vintage “Melrose Place” was nearing the end of its first season when Locklear joined as a “special guest star” and instantly made the show a deliciously naughty hit. She ended up staying for all seven seasons.
And now? Well, producers of the updated “Melrose Place” wanted Locklear back from the start. But Locklear reportedly didn’t like the ideas they had for Amanda.
Creative ideas have obviously been resolved. Translation: They came up with more money.
Reaction to Locklear’s return is enthusiastic.
“Be sure to pair Woodward up with Katie Cassidy’s Ella, because that uberbitch tête à tête is too delicious to pass up!” said the New York Post.
“It will be interesting to see if Locklear can have a similar effect on the new show, which has produced only modest Nielsen numbers so far,” said the San Jose Mercury News.
“Yes, she might give viewers a reason to tune in this recycled trash,” said the Orlando Sentinel’s TV Guy, Hal Boedeker.
Fancast’s bottom line: It can only help.
Locklear’s real life is almost as colorful as anything on “Melrose Place.”
She was originally discovered as a UCLA student modeling clothes in the school’s catalog.
She landed a part as a rookie police officer opposite William Shatner on ‘T.J. Hooker‘. Never had anyone looked as sexy in a cop’s uniform.
At the same time, she also appeared on the prime time soap “Dynasty” as bad girl siren Sammy Jo, and her career took off.
She married and divorced Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee.
She then entered a long-term relationship with Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora. They had one child, daughter Ava, together
Their relationship ended when Sambora left Locklear for actress Denise Richards.
Locklear has since struggled with personal problems, including a DUI arrest.
