Every year, the MTV VMA’s dish out some outlandish television moments, and this year certainly had its fair share (yes, that means Kanye). The night kicked off with a tribute to Michael Jackson, but at the end, this show was all about the performances. From Pink to Beyonce, everything came off flawless – well almost.

I’m Here, Let the Party Begin!

For the most part, the arrivals at Radio City were pretty tame aside from some artists who were creative. Pink came in on a fire truck with her on-again, off-again husband Carey Hart. Taylor Swift rode in on a horse drawn carriage and Lady Gaga showed up with Kermit the Frog, who she kissed good-bye after arriving on the carpet.

The Micro-Mini Show

Ashley Greene from Twilight predicted in the pre-show that we’d get to see lots of metallics, and boy was she right! Both Shakira and Pink rocked the same black and silver tight mini dress. Both Kristin Cavallari from ‘The Hills’ and Leighton Meester – everyone’s favorite ‘Gossip Girl’ – wore mini silver dresses.

And then the real Queen B, Beyonce, brought some heat with a plunging red micro mini dress that looked super hot! Jennifer Lopez showed up with a shiny, bizarre looking cream colored dress and explained on the carpet that her style has had “many incarnations.” The person with the most incarnations though was, of course Lady Gaga, who went from one extreme outfit to another and never seemed to care how ridiculous she looks. From head coverings to face masks, that girl wore it all.

The King of Pop Lives On…

Madonna opened the night with a few touching words for Michael Jackson. She recalled a few tender dinner dates they had in the early 90′s where she referred to him as “shy.” “There will never be anyone like him again… He was so original, so unique. Sometimes we have to lose things before we can appreciate them.” She closed her speech with a sincere, “long live the king”.

And then the real tribute began.

With a backdrop of MJ’s “Thriller,” a group of dancers flooded the stage with his famous moves followed by songs “Bad” and “Smooth Criminal.” As “Scream” began so did a roaring crowd, knowing that it signaled Janet Jackson’s entrance. Michael’s little sis’ came on and performed his part of the video, with perfectly synchronized dance moves. At the end, Janet looked up towards the ceiling, visibly emotional.

An Improved Russell Brand

Katy and Lee Perry performed “We Will Rock You” for Russell’s entrance. In his opening speech, the British Comedian referred to a few slip ups from last year and mentioned how the world is different with Barack Obama in office. “It seems like I could say whatever I want and get away with it,” he grinned. “I’m English, we can be unusual.” And that he was! He had the crowd laughing with his crude and inappropriate comments, but for the most part he wasn’t out of line – definitely a step up from last year.

The OMG Moment

When Sweet Taylor Swift accepted her award for Best Female Video, saying “I always dreamed about what it would be like to win one of these some day, but I never actually thought it would happen. Thank you so much for giving me a chance to win a VMA award.” And before she could finish her speech, a crazed Kanye West snagged the microphone out of her hands and exclaimed, “I’m really happy for you, I’m going to let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!” This left both Beyonce (who was sitting first row) and Taylor, shocked. The young star just stood there afterward in disbelief.

The redefining moment happened when Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” took Video of the Year. She then said, “I’d like for Taylor to come out and have her moment.” The young country singer came up beaming and just smiled and said, “Maybe we can try this again?”

They Rocked the House

Lady Gaga performed with no pants and one leg on top of the piano, Taylor Swift sang on a subway with doting fans singing along and Beyonce rocked the crowd with a silver leotard and amazing dance moves.

Nothing compared to Pink’s Cirque du Soleil type act, swinging from a trapeze as she belted out “Sober.” The rock-star was upside down for most of the performance and in her purple leotard with a pasty covering one boob, she was really the stand out, sky high, gravity defying act on a night everyone will be talking about.
