Ellen DeGeneres has some big shoes to fill on ‘American Idol,’ and she doesn’t want to step on the feet that those shoes belong to.
“I hope Paula’s OK with it,” she told Ryan Seacrest on KIIS FM this morning about her new judge gig on ‘Idol’. “I don’t want anyone to think I took Paula’s job away…Paula was a huge part of the show, and that’s a role that needs to be filled by someone in a totally different way.”
The comedianne also added that she would be nice to the contestants, unlike a certain other judge. “I’m not going to be mean,” she told Seacrest “I hate it when Simon’s that mean.” She added “I think you can be honest in a pretty kind way. I hope to be that compassionate person. That’s the one thing Paula did bring, that compassion.”
How did she feel when she got the good news that she had been chosen as a permanent judge? “I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? I love that show. I absolutely would give anything to be a part of that,’” she said.
But as excited as her fans were when she made the announcement on ‘Ellen,’ there have been many more naysayers. Most are confused as to why Fox would pick a judge without any musical background.
“I’m just a fan like everybody else,” she said about the critiques. “Ultimately, it doesn’t come down to some expert in the music industry, it comes down to the person at home that says, ‘That’s the person I relate to and whose records I’m going to buy.’ I hope to be that voice.”
DeGeneres recently got to try out her judging skills on an episode of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ last season and she killed it with her deadpan wit.
“I’m going to have fun with it,” she said of her new job.
