With his very public marriage kaput, Jon Gosselin has gone on the attack against his soon-to-be ex wife Kate Gosselin.
“I can’t sit on the sofa with that woman,” he said in an exclusive interview with ABC News. “I can’t sit with someone right now that I despise.”
Welcome to the new version of TV’s most painful reality show, Jon Minus Kate. Yes, there are eight children involved, but that hasn’t stopped Jon or Kate from taking their respective stories to the airwaves in what seems to be a battle for hearts, minds, and headlines.
After taking a drubbing for squiring his girlfriend, Hailey Glassman, in the south of France and whopping it up recently at a Las Vegas pool party, he sat down with Good Morning America’s Chris Cuomo for an interview that was so successful the show ran a second part. In it, Jon bared his heart – and fangs.
“I feel like I love [Hailey] more than I did Kate,” he said. “I get encouragement and respect from her – two things a man needs.”
“I didn’t leave Kate for Hailey,” he said. “People think I left Kate for Hailey because of the time-frame and what they printed in the tabloids. You can’t control who you love. I strongly believe that. You cannot control that. It’s two people joined together.”
How about rumors that Kate was involved with her bodyguard? Jon said he was as interested as anyone to know the truth.
“I’ve speculated,” he said. “I have asked her. But I don’t know. When they traveled together, I was jealous. Whether it was for protection or not, it was in the back of my mind.”
It turns out the couple sought therapy from TV’s Dr. Phil. They flew to Los Angeles, but Jon found the trip a confusing waste of time. “It was more about fixing the show than the marriage,” he said. “I said, ‘Huh?’ It was all about protecting the brand [of Jon & Kate Plus Eight].”
Gee, are we getting Jon all wrong? Could he have actually be more interesting in saving his marriage than the TLC hit show that made him a household name, got him into the fancy clubs, the yachts, the Vegas pool parties and then to the GMA interview chair?
Maybe Dr. Phil needs to help all of us. Now I’m confused.
And Kate’s response to all this?
“While I certainly have a very different perception of how our marriage dissolved, for the sake of our children I’m not going into aspects I think should remain private,” she told GMA in a statement.
“She knows the truth,” said Jon. “I wish to god she would speak from her heart.”
There are plenty more who wish both of them would stop talking.
“Truthfully, I think we were a better team when we weren’t on the show,” said Jon.
“This marriage is over because we’re two different people going in two different directions,” he added. “That spark fizzles out.”
In a statement to ABC News, Kate Gosselin decided to take the high road.
“While I certainly have a very different perception of how our marriage dissolved, for the sake of my children I maintain that I’m not going to go into details of aspects I believe should remain private,” she said.
And if Jon could say something to Kate?
“I would say, let’s finish what we got to finish and move on with our lives,” Gosselin said. “And stop feeding into the frenzy.”
Yes, Jon. Please stop.
