Here’s what’s available on Comcast On Demand today, which you can order through your cable system and watch immediately. There’s the political journalism thriller State of Play, starring Russell Crowe as a dogged Washington Post reporter, Rachel McAdams as the cub blogger learning by doing, Helen Mirren as their editor-in-chief struggling with the bottom line and Ben Affleck as the congressman in the center of a whirlwind scandal. Then there’s Gigantic, wherein Paul Dano falls for Zooey Deschanel despite her overbearing father John Goodman. Also, the highly acclaimed drama Sin Nombre, about a young Hounduran woman on a train trying to emigrate to America and a better life.

State of Play
A tight political thriller that highlights the importance of true journalism in our talking-head sound-bite media world. Russell Crowe is Cal McAffery, a reporter for the Washington Globe whose investigation of a routine drug killing eventually embroils him in the scandal unfolding around his longtime friend and current congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck), who was cheating on his wife (Robin Wright Penn) with a member of his staff, who has just been found dead. While Cal’s boss Cameron (Helen Mirren) wants to run with the salacious story to try to keep the dying newspaper afloat, Cal and his reluctantly-accepted assistant from the blogger pool Della (Rachel McAdams) keep digging into the surrounding details until they uncover a plot to discredit Collins from the private Blackwater-esque military mercenary company he’s trying to nail to the wall. Topical, interesting and a reminder of why we’ve liked everyone in this cast, especially Jason Bateman in a supporting role as a flashy PR guy mysteriously connected to the conspiracy.

Gigantic
Paul Dano stars as a listless mattress salesman and the afterthought child of his family who falls for a woman (Zooey Deschanel) who falls asleep in his store one day. Also starring John Goodman, Ed Asner, Jane Alexander and Zach Galifianakis.

Sin Nombre
A critically-acclaimed drama about a young man on the run from a street gang trying to emigrate to the United States with a teenage Honduran girl and her long lost father.
