Meredith Vieira will sit down with Ryan O’Neal in his first interview after his partner Farrah Fawcett’s passing. The segments will air Tuesday, July 21, on “Today.”

In the interview, O’Neal tackles life after her death, and how he is surviving his great loss. “Well, I’m the new rock. And– I’m using what she taught me to– to survive. To go on. To care for my son, Redmond,” he says to Mieira. “And– and– I have launched into this massive job of answering the mail that has come in for her over the last few weeks. Hundreds and hundreds of letters of– of– pain and sorrow and hope and– so I– I’m answering them. Every one. That’s my life now. It’s gonna take a while.”

He also describes the difficult last moments of her life, as he sat in the hospital room while the love of his life was dying of cancer. “It was horrible. It was horrible. It was– he thought that she would live just another couple of hours, and she lived a couple of days,” he said. “So I had a bed put in the room for me. And I just lay by her side. And she wouldn’t– move on. She wouldn’t pass. She just– she just looked at us with– with a slight smile. Was awful. And then– and then all the machines flat lined. After about– 16 hours. And she was– she was gone.”
