O’Neal reveals the wedding news to Barbara Walters in an upcoming ’20/20′ interview.
“I’ve asked her to marry me, again, and she’s agreed,” O’Neal tells Walters.
Farrah was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer is 2006 and is “fighting for her life,” according to O’Neal.
Fawcett, 62, and O’Neal, 68, began dating in 1980 and have previously lived together, but never tied the knot. They have one child, 24-year-old son Redmond, who’s currently in rehab.
“I used to ask her to marry me all the time,” O’Neal says. “But…it just got to be a joke, you know. We just joked about it.”
But O’Neal promises they will now, “absolutely.” “We will, as soon as she can, say yes…Maybe we can just nod her head,” O’Neal says with a laugh.
Watching his longtime love bravely battle cancer has made O’Neal more in love with her than ever, he said in a May interview. Fawcett documented her illness in a documentary that aired on NBC in the spring.
No word on whether or not any nuptials would be included, but that would make a lovely story, indeed.
The ’20/20′ interview with Ryan O’Neal, which includes an update from Farrah’s doctors, airs Friday at 10 p.m. on ABC.
