For the second season of “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” producers of ABC Family’s pregnancy-themed hit faced the prospect of star Molly Ringwald’s real-life expectancy.

“It was a question of whether or not they would write it in, and I said I didn’t want to go through a full season of walking around with towels in front of me,” says the 41-year-old actor, who is due very soon to deliver twins. “So, at the beginning of the season, I find out I’m pregnant, and that’s sort of what my character is dealing with – having a grandchild that’s older than my new child.

Ringwald, who plays Anne Juergens, mother to teen mom Amy Juergens (Shailene Woodley), has been off the set since the end of May (production of the show is set to resume through August). Getting everything done before her maternity leave presented a bit of a challenge, she says.

.

“I was able to shoot about 12 episodes – I even shot three episodes in one day for just my part,” she explains. “And when I come back from maternity leave, I’ll shoot three more.”

Already a mother to a five-year-old, Ringwald adds, “It’s constantly interesting to me to play a mother of a teenager. I’m not really there yet in my own life. I’m kind of jumping ahead and living the life I’m going to be living 10 or 15 years from now.”
