Will Ferrell roughed it with Bear Grylls Tuesday night on a special episode of ‘Man vs. Wild‘ and the program enjoyed its largest audience ever, with 4 million viewers. It’s quite a week for Ferrell as he was buddy Conan O’Brien’s first guest on ‘The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien,’ and he also has a big movie opening Friday – ‘Land of the Lost.’ Way to cover all your bases, Will.
Some might ask why. Why do I still watch the ‘Real World/Road Rules Challenge?’ Well the answer could be summed up with the title of last night’s mission: “Spelling Bee.” If you want to see how truly dumb reality show contestants can be, look no further than the following attempts to spell words in last night’s episode:
“Arthmatic” – Diem’s attempt at “arithmetic”
“Excerise” – Aneesa’s attempt at “exercise”
“Frate” – Brittini’s feebly try at “freight”
“Mellinum” – Tori’s grasp at “millennium”
And those were just the girls. The boys fared no better…
“Thron” – Brad’s try at “throne”
“Emaculate” – MJ’s weak attempt at “immaculate”
If there was any doubt about the level of intelligence of 95 percent of the people on these shows, they evaporated after last night’s challenge. And yes, I did feel slight offended (yet greatly amused) as I was the 6th grade Spelling Bee champ. I’ve always had rather low tolerance for poor spellers.

Another Wednesday night highlight was the Las Vegas round of Fox’s ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ Yes, the dancers are amazing and can do things I can never dream of, and yes the backstories are often moving, but what I live for on this show are the judges. Mary Murphy comes off as the sweet “Paula” of the bunch but she is anything but. She can cut a contestant down to size so fast with just a quick, off-handed bitchy remark. And last night was also the first we saw this season of Mia Michaels, the renowned modern dance goddess, and she practically makes Mary look sweet by comparison. I live for the moments when Mia keeps it so real, and trashes a contestant. As she said last night, “I’m not afraid to cut. I love cutting contestants.” Bring it Mia!
