Variety is reporting that HBO has agreed to a deal with Ricky Gervais, a creator and star of HBO’s ‘Extras‘ as well as the BBC version of ‘The Office,’ to develop an animated series based on Gervais’ very popular podcast, “The Ricky Gervais Show.”

Media Rights Capital, which also produces HBO’s animated comedy,’The Life & Times of Tim,’ is producing the show. HBO has picked up 13 half-hour episodes, which will air in 2010.

The signature podcast also features Stephen Merchant, who also appeared in ‘The Office’ and ‘Extras,’ and cult phenom, Karl Pilkington, as the producer.

“They find him [Pilkington] to be the funniest person in the world,” Media Rights Capital’s Modi Wiczyk told Variety. “Ricky says Karl is like crack to him.” According to Gervais and Merchant, “Karl is a man who believes that a sea lion is a cross between a fish and a dog. Hopefully, Karl will enter the pantheon of animated greats.”
