Seven Pounds
In perhaps Will Smith’s darkest role ever, he plays accountant Ben Thomas, a man haunted by a mysterious secret in his past who has dedicated his life to finding people worthy of helping in every way he possibly can in his quest for redemption. When he meets Emily (Rosario Dawson), who is awash in financial struggles thanks to her need of a heart transplant, he is torn between the deep relationship he forms with her and the fact that love is something he doesn’t feel he deserves.

The Reader
Kate Winslet won her Academy Award for her role as Hanna Schmitz, a lonely German woman who has an intense affair with a teenage boy (David Kross) that defines the young man’s perception of love. When he later learns that she has a dark Nazi past, those perceptions are shattered, leading him to grow into a broken, distant older man (Ralph Fiennes) who can’t reconcile the truth with what he had believed his first love to be.
