The ‘incident’ occurred when the actor headbutted fashion designer Jack McCollough–over actress Brooke Shields–early Tuesday morning at an after party for the Met’s annual Costume Gala in New York City.
Sutherland, 42, will reportedly surrender to prosecutors to face a misdemeanor assault charge, according to the New York Daily News.
McCollough, of the fashion house Proenza Schouler, suffered a busted nose.
Partygoers claim Sutherland was provoked when McCollough bumped into/pushed (reports vary) Brooke Shields in front of a SoHo club and Kiefer jumped to her defense. However, a rep for Shields tells TMZ, “nothing happened to her.”
A representative for McCollough told People: “All we can say at this point is that he was the victim of a vicious, violent, unprovoked assault and that the matter is in the hands of the authorities.”
Witnesses told authorities that Sutherland appeared intoxicated.
“Kiefer is sorry it happened. Absolutely. It’s terribly regrettable,” a source tells the Daily News.
“There is an ongoing investigation,” a spokesman for the Los Angeles city attorney’s office said.
