He’s your new James T. Kirk. He may be your new Green Lantern next year. If he has his way, he’ll even be your new “Howling Mad” Murdock in The A-Team. So where the hell did Chris Pine come from all of a sudden?
He was born in 1980 into an acting family, the son of CHiPs regular Robert Pine and Masters of the Universe star Gwynne Gilford. Growing up with dinner table talk of acting as little more than a job took most of the romance out of it for him at an early age, and it wasn’t his first career choice. But when he went to college and chickened out of pursuing his dreams of being an athlete, the family business started to look better and better.
In 2006, he starred as Lindsey Lohan’s love interest in Just My Luck, a movie wherein Lohan’s good luck and Pine’s bad luck switch places. In an ironic twist, the same thing seems to have happened for their real-life careers.
Also in 2006, Pine played a young sightless man struggling to find love in the romantic comedy Blind Dating.
See if you can spot Pine in this crazy shootout clip from Smokin’ Aces, also in 2006. (Hint: He’s a psycho Nazi)
If you’re wondering whether or not he’s really got enough swagger and cunning to be Jim Kirk, check out this scene from last year’s Bottle Shock, where he defends a friend of his with intellect and a willingness to take a punch.
Now, of course, he’s got the make or break role of his career, and all signs are pointing to his making it as the captain of the Enterprise in Star Trek. Here are a few clips of Pine in his prime.
Stay tuned for more from Chris Pine and the rest of the Star Trek cast.
