Twilight is shaping up to be a very strange franchise, and that’s not just because it’s about a glittery 100-year-old virgin stalking an underage girl. The stars may be remaining the same, but each of the first three films in series are going to have different directors. Catherine Hardwicke directed Twilight, of course, and Chris Weitz is helming New Moon, the second installment. Now it’s just been announced that David Slade (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night) will be taking on the third chapter, Eclipse.
Author Stephenie Meyer seems excited by the news. “I am thrilled that David Slade will be directing Eclipse.” she said. “He’s a visionary filmmaker who has so much to offer this franchise. From the beginning, we’ve been blessed with wonderful directorial talent for the Twilight Saga, and I’m so happy that Eclipse will be carrying on with that tradition.” It also looks like they might be sticking “The Twilight Saga” in front of the titles of the new films as well, which seems a smidge pretentious, but you’ll get that with vampire stories. Slade does have experience with suckheads in 30 Days of Night, as well as intense teenagers with Hard Candy, so that should help him out. The big question is whether or not either of the men at the helm of the next two sequels have what it takes to do justice to what is essentially a teenage girl sexual fantasy series. Or will they bring in Blade to just slice and dice everything?
Would you like to hear a little gossip from the New Moon production? Well, here’s a report that tells us that dreamy Robert Pattinson not only suffered a head injury, but apparently he also stinks to high heaven because he never showers. Maybe he’s trying to really capture that ‘undead’ vibe.
Of course, there are those for whom shiny bloodsuckers hold no appeal. For them, this is what a Twilight movie is – an old-school mystery starring Paul Newman, James Garner, Gene Hackman and Susan Sarandon, which also features a topless Reese Witherspoon.
