Maybe Hugh Jackman was right, and the musical is back.

The producers of Hairspray have apparently recruited Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal to take on roles in their upcoming contemporary adaptation of the well-known musical Damn Yankees, which is the story of a man who makes a deal with the devil to save a baseball team (insert your own Alex Rodriguez joke here). Carrey would reportedly play Satan, while Gyllenhaal would play Joe Boyd, the man transformed by Beelzebub’s witchcraft into a big-time slugger by the name of Joe Hardy who carries the Bronx Bombers to the World Series. Of course, as any arrangement with Lucifer tends to go, Joe has second thoughts, but his deadline to break the deal falls smack dab in the middle of the championship. What a pickle! Can Joe do what’s right?

More importantly, can Carrey and Gyllenhaal sing well enough to carry a musical?

And here is the early 90s supergroup who dubbed themselves Damn Yankees, featuring Ted Nugent and Tommy Shaw.
