Meet Samantha Dezur, one of the three interns starring in the Style Network’s new series Running in Heels, a thoroughly entertaining docu-reality show following three young women as they cope with the deadline pressures and fastidious attention to detail needed to work at Marie Claire magazine. Dezur lands the plumb assignment of working with Marie Claire editor in chief Joanna Coles and its star fashion editor Nina Garcia. (In the pilot, watch each girl’s face as the jobs are handed out, especially the last one – it’s priceless.) We chatted with Dezur about her job and her life prior to the show.

Name: Samantha DeZur
Age: 21
Hometown: Osh Kosh, WI
College: University of Wisconsin
Major: Spanish, Integrative Liberal Studies, and Communications
Favorite Designers: Marc Jacobs and BCBG

On how she landed the internship…
I actually applied for the internship though a website through my school, the University of Wisconsin. The magazine itself wasn’t listed, but it was listed as a successful fashion magazine. I thought it was a long shot but I had a few interviews and I ended up getting it.

On how the internship changed her career course…
Working here [at Marie Claire] was a lot different than I thought it was going to be. I didn’t know what to expect. People think of fashion magazines as being glossy and glamorous… it’s not. It’s a lot of hard work. I realized that fashion publications are not right for me.

On how The Hills compares…
[The Hills] seems to be more focused on their personal lives and relationships. And while there is a component of that on Running in Heels, it’s more focused on our internships and what we had to go through.

On her favorite day as an intern…
There was one day where I thought I was on top of the world. This was during the Nina Garcia welcome party. I was chosen as the intern that got to help the PR department work the red carpet. And I was on the top of my game. I helped with everything, and I got a good review on top of it.

.
On working with Nina Garcia…
I actually didn’t have a lot of interaction with her, but she’s a sweet woman. She knows a lot about fashion and I could learn a lot from her.

On editor-in-chief Joanna Coles…
I absolutely love Joanna. She’s an incredible boss. As an editor-in-chief, she has a great open door policy and you really feel like you could come to her with your ideas, thoughts or comments. She’s personable, she’s down to earth, and she’s provided a lot of great guidance.

On running in heels…
There were a lot of errands I had to go on where I had to run in my heels. They wanted things to get done quickly. At first my feet were just bleeding every day but you get used to it. I’ve definitely learned to appreciate the painful side of fashion.

On shopping on a budget…
You don’t have to buy all designer things. You can look good in things from H&M and American Apparel. What I do is have one great piece, like a great pair of shoes, and then the rest of it is inexpensive.

On why people should watch the show…
It’s a great insight to people’s first job. This was my first internship, so they’re going to be able to say “Oh my god, I experienced that same thing on my first job.” It’s real, and I think it’s going to be great for a lot of different audiences.
