D-Day For Analog TV As 400 Stations Ignore FCC Digital Delay Request

by | February 18, 2009 at 8:30 AM | TV News

According to The Hollywood Reporter, despite legislation to push back last night’s deadline for the national switch from analog to digital TV, 400 stations around the country are refusing to comply with The FCC’s recommendation that the hand-off be delayed until June 12th. That means millions of viewers will not be getting their morning news today, along with that first cup of Joe.

Who are the biggest losers? San Diego will be the largest city to lose analog broadcasts of three networks: CBS, ABC and Fox.

Smaller cities losing most or all of their major analog network broadcasts include Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okla.; Charleston and Greenville, S.C.; Dayton, Ohio; Springfield, Ill.; Burlington, Vt.; Bakersfield, Calif.; Binghamton, N.Y.; Casper, Wyo.; Lincoln, Neb.; Lubbock, Texas; Mobile, Ala.; and Sioux Falls, S.D.

Check for your market after the jump.

Why would these stations ignore the FCC? Smaller market stations are less able to absorb the impact of the extended deadline, having already scheduled engineering and maintenance, and the delayed switch could have a negative impact on ad revenue. Most of the stations have agreed to broadcast a “night light” analog signal running news and emergency information, but the switch to digital will go on as planned.

So either get yourself a TV with a digital tuner, buy an anolog-to-digital switching box or get on the horn with your local satellite or cable TV service, because if you intend to tune in to the first American Idol results show tonight, you’re gonna need more than rabbit ears.

Here’s a list of all the stations that are ignoring the FCC, but remember – you can always catch up on your favorite TV programs by watching FREE full length episodes right here on Fancast! No converter necessary.
