This isn’t fun. In fact, it might turn the worm on the general good impression people have of Christian Bale, and it’ll certainly shine a new light on his arrest in England last summer for “verbal assault.” Apparently, only a few days after that arrest, Terminator: Salvation DP Shane Hurlbut accidentally ruined a shot by walking into frame, and Bale absolutely flipped out on him like a complete diva and even wanted him fired. Of course, TMZ has audio that was apparently sent to the film’s insurance company, in case Bale quit in a huff and ruined the production. The proximity of this explosion and that verbal assault charge (that was later dropped, but perhaps hadn’t been by this point) means that he was likely having a really bad time all around, as it was also right in the midst of that crush of international Dark Knight press he had to do as well, which can be extraordinarily stressful.
Obviously, he calmed down later and they finished the movie, and it’s looking pretty interesting, but jeez, man, this is rough. Everyone always says Bale is super-intense on sets, but let’s hope that isn’t just code for “flips out like a jerk all the time.” The guy does amazing work, and he’s Batman, for pete’s sake. No one wants him to be a real-life jackass. Maybe he just needs some anger-management classes, or maybe it was just a passing thing. The A.D. from the film says “it was just a moment” and it passed quickly, and says Bale is a “consummate professional” who just had a bad day when the most emotional and difficult scene in the movie got screwed up. We all have bad days, right? Especially when you’re trying to do something really hard and someone else ruins it? Sure. You might flip out, too.
