The MTV Video Music Awards wants you to think that it’s all about the music, but reality show stars ruled the red carpet before the show this year. Up first on the celebrity catwalk at the VMA’s being held at Paramount Studios, Hollywood was the cast of The Real World. They told us that they’ve met the new Real World cast and that we can expect a huge surprise (one we’ll share with you later this week!). Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt chose to walk the entire carpet (unlike many stars) and gracefully talked to as many reporters as possible, winning the day’s “OMG they really are that nice in person” award. They both looked somehow extra blonde and dare I say angelic, under the sparkling Southern California sunshine.

But who were the stars there to see? Nicky Hilton glided past us in a gorgeous tan dress and fierce ponytail, and told us that she was most looking forward to The Jonas Brothers performance, while the Plain White T’s took a more cheeky approach to the question saying, “I’m looking forward to the performances. And also any wardrobe malfunctions.” Veteran VMA musician Kid Rock was more practical: “I’m looking forward to In-N-Out burgers after the show.”

T Pain took the term “making a grand entrance” to the extreme, showing up on top of an elephant and then rocking out to a “Psycho Killer” by Talking Heads on the Rockband 2 stage, which was set up at the end of the carpet for stars to get their game on.

From afar you could occasionally hear fans screeching upon the arrival of stars like The Jonas Brothers, who later performed, Chace Crawford, who didn’t do much walking on the carpet, and Paris Hilton, who showed up with her new besties–the girls from her brand new reality show, Paris Hilton’s New BFF.

What kind of swag did the celebs get? A mini-vacation in the Dominican Republic, a lambskin purse, a year’s worth of Rhapsody tunes, Fendi sunglasses and luxury skin care products. Enough bling bling to last until next year’s VMA’s.
