Reports: Kansas City Chiefs Player Kills Girlfriend, Commits Suicide at Arrowhead

UPDATE, 11:20 a.m.: A team source has reportedly informed Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com that the player involved in the deadly shootings was 25-year-old linebacker Jovan Belcher. It is believed that Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend early this morning, then drove to the team’s facility and turned the gun on himself in the parking lot outside Arrowhead Stadium. Police have not confirmed whether Belcher was the shooter.

UPDATE, 11:38 a.m.: Deadspin.com is reporting (via @ESPN980Radio ‘s Twitter feed and others) that Belcher may have committed suicide after being confronted by head coach Romeo Crennel and GM Scott Pioli in the parking lot.

Police have yet to confirm whether Belcher, a four-year player out of the University of Maine, was the shooter.

KCTV in Kansas City, MO., is reporting that police have locked down Arrowhead Stadium following multiple reports that an unnamed Chiefs player has committed suicide at the team’s facility. The station is also reporting that an unidentified woman was fatally killed earlier this morning and that the woman is thought to be the player’s girlfriend.

The player has not been identified, but the Chiefs organization released a statement moments ago confirming an incident took place at their stadium and that police are investigating.

“Police are investigating two deadly shootings Saturday morning that they said are related.

“The shootings involve a Chiefs player and his girlfriend.

“The first shooting was reported about 8 a.m. at a home near 54th Street and Chrysler Avenue. The second shooting was reported a short time later at a Chiefs practice facility located on the Arrowhead facility.

“Officials said the Chiefs player shot and killed his girlfriend and then drove to the practice facility where he shot and killed himself.

“It’s unknown if people were at Arrowhead or any of its surrounding facilities at the time.”
