Another one bites the dust.

We thought USA basketball finally made it through the difficult strike-shortened season somewhat scathed, but with enough players to compete in at the London Games. Then we lost Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on back-to-back days. Oy.

Now reports from Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo say New Orleans Hornets forward Anthony Davis somehow “severely” sprained his ankle mere days after being named the No. 1 pick at the NBA Draft last Thursday. He’s officially off the team, too.

USA Hoops won’t be able to compete against the likes of Spain, who boasts Pau Gasol and Marc Gasol as well as defensive specialist Serge Ibaka, if they don’t have any big men to put against them.

The team is now down to only 15 finalists for 12 spots and might need to grab a couple more players for the pool before the members are officially announced following a camp in Las Vegas on Friday. Kurt Helin over at NBC’s Pro Basketball Talk suggests Roy Hibbert and DeMarcus Cousins.
