Angelina Jolie kept her double mastectomy under wraps until her public announcement on Monday. Even her father, actor Jon Voight, was unaware that she had undergone the preventative procedure over three months, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Voight found out about his daughter’s decision after reading her op-ed in the New York Times. The “Tomb Raider” actress remained tight-lipped about the surgery, despite seeing her dad at a birthday party for her brother James Haven just two days before.
“I didn’t know. It wasn’t obvious at all,” Voight shared. “I found out (Tuesday) morning. I was as surprised as anyone and deeply moved by the way she’s handled this,” the 74-year-old actor said.
Voight referred to his daughter as “a very extraordinary person.” The proud father continued, “My love and admiration for my daughter can’t be explained in words.”
Jolie did take the time to talk with her father on Tuesday and explain why the decision was made. The father-daughter relationship has come a long way since their falling out in 2002. The two were estranged for a decade after Voight accused his daughter of suffering from serious mental problems, and Jolie shared her disapproval of her father’s affair while married to her mother. The rift would lead to her filing to legally remove Voight from name.
