Explosive excerpts from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new tell-all book, “Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story,” recount the demise of his 25-year marriage to Maria Shriver.
The Huffington Post reports that “The Terminator” actor, 65, writes in detail about the day Shriver, 56, confronted him about cheating and fathering a child with the family housekeeper, Mildred Baena.
Shriver, who shares four children with Schwarzenegger, waited until his term as California governor ended in January of 2011 to bring up the allegations during a therapy session.
“The minute we sat down, the therapist turned to me and said, ‘Maria wanted to come here today and to ask about a child—whether you fathered a child with your housekeeper Mildred,’” the actor writes. “I told the therapist, ‘It’s true.’”
ABC News reports that Schwarzenegger begged his wife not to leave. He told Shriver that he had “screwed up” and that she was the “perfect wife.” His pleas fell on deaf ears. Shriver filed for divorce in July of 2011.
Schwarzenegger also details his affair with Baena, which took place in 1996 during the filming of “Batman and Robin” while Shriver was on vacation with the couple’s kids. Baena gave birth to a son nine months later.
Despite the timing, Schwarzenegger tried to convince himself that the boy was not his.
“Instead of doing the right thing, I’d just put the truth in a mental compartment and locked it up where I didn’t deal with it every day,” he revealed, but the charade did not last. “I realized there was little doubt that he was my son.”
Schwarzenegger still believes that reconciliation with Shriver is possible.
“You can call this denial,” he writes. “But it’s the way my mind works.”
