This weekend brings the holidays closer and many of the events that make the season special are starting to arrive. Sunday also marks the day that same-sex couples can legally marry in Washington, and many businesses will be holding celebrations and events to mark the day. Here are some must-see events to attend and places to be this weekend in Seattle.

Great Figgy Pudding Street Corner Caroling Competition
When: Friday, Dec. 7 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Price: Free to watch ($75 per team to enter)

The 26th year of this annual competition brings together more than 40 caroling teams competing for bragging rights in front of 10,000 spectators. The teams will belt out classic holiday songs on street corners in and around Westlake Center with the best of the lot competing on the main stage for victory. All proceeds from the event benefit the Pike Market Senior Center and Downtown Food Bank, offering important support during the holiday season.

This annual event highlights the best of Seattle woodworking and includes live music performed by folk duo WhiteFort. The pieces on display are one-of-a-kind, breathtaking works of art. Running through December 30, the event is a competition for the woodworkers, but following the award presentation toward the end of the month, the purchased pieces will be released to buyers. The gallery is a woodworking cooperative promoting quality craftsmanship, design, and fine furniture.

Christmas Lights on the Lakes

The largest steam powered paddle wheeler west of the Mississippi hosts a Christmas view of Seattle only seen from the water. The Queen of Seattle cruise is three hours around Lake Union and Lake Washington to view holiday lights beaming from the shores. Seasonal music will fill the boat as a dessert buffet is served.  Cocktails, beer, and wine are available for purchase throughout the ride. The dress is business casual but costumes are also appropriate.

Cookie Fest
When: Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

More than 20 of Seattle’s bakeries and culinary schools will participate in this year’s annual Cookie Fest. Upon Macy’s opening, the third floor will be full of treats just waiting for people to meander through and decide what they want to take home. There will be arts and crafting activities available for children so parents can make their sweet selections. All the proceeds will go to Seattle Milk Fund to provide child care services for full-time college students, helping them reach their goals and relieve financial stress.

Sunday brings a huge change to the state of Washington, allowing same-sex couples to marry. To celebrate the event, Q will hold a wedding reception party for all those who whish to participate. The event will be hosted by The Stranger’s Dan Savage and his husband. The party will include first dances, funny cake-cutting photos, and many champagne toasts to honor the newlyweds. Riz Rollins will be on hand to provide the music for the emotional day.

Seattle’s signature winter fun run will be at it again on Sunday for this annually chilly 5K. Dressing up in holiday theme is encouraged while runners make their way around the downtown course. Participation fees go to benefit the Arthritis Foundation to help support those with mobility issues due to the disease. The race kicks off from Westlake Center starting with a 1k children’s fun run and will proceed in groups according to speed.

Capitol Hill’s Poco Wine Room will be hosting its annual holiday tasting event on Sunday. For the single entry fee, customers will receive eight tastings, four each of red and sparkling wine. Buy any bottle from the tastings and Poco will provide one cocktail mixed from the group of your choosing. Scratch bartenders will be on hand to show guests what they can make at home with the various varietals beyond just a straight pour.
