Police are investigating a student-teacher relationship after James Hooker, 41, left his family and his job at a California high school to live with a student.

While the senior, Jordan Powers, is now 18, the Modesto Bee reports that police want to know if the couple had any inappropriate contact before the girl’s birthday last fall.

Hooker was placed on leave by Modesto City Schools from his job at Enochs High School in early February, and resigned Feb. 22. The community is about 90 miles east of San Francisco.

One of his two children is a junior at the high school.

“In making our choice, we’ve hurt a lot of people,” Hooker told the Modesto Bee. “We keep asking ourselves, ‘Do we make everyone else happy or do we follow our hearts?’ ”

Powers’ mother, Tammie Powers, has waged “a very public campaign on Facebook” since she moved in with the ex-teacher last week, the Modesto Bee reports.

She first became suspicious about a relationship after thousands of text messages from Hooker, dating back through the summer, were found on her daughter’s phone.
