Eight-time Grammy winner Adele has quickly risen to fame with her internationally acclaimed album 21, but as she tell Matt Lauer, the singing sensation would rather enjoy her success privately than in the spotlight.

“I don’t want to be a celebrity . . . I don’t want to be in people’s faces,” Adele admitted in an interview with Lauer.

Growing up modestly in a working-class section of London, the 24-year-old artist isn’t interested in the media circus that comes with being an industry icon.

“I was adopting an Ethiopian child … that’s not true. My house was haunted, that wasn’t true,” she said in the NBC special airing June 3. “God, there’s been so many [rumors].”

Despite her global presence, Adele has managed to stay under the radar and keep from being recognized by fans. “The other day I walked through Trafalgar Square on a Sunday afternoon, a tourist haven,” she said. “I was a bit worried. I was in my pajamas. I was in color. I’m always in black. I threw pumps on, this massive green coat and then little pink pumps. Nobody recognized me.”

And although she may shy away from her mega-star status, Adele has no plans to disappear any time soon. “I just want to make music,” she told Lauer. “I mean, I still hope I have a little bit of clout in ten years. But all I’ve ever wanted to do was sing.”
