Looks like I spoke too soon.
Just weeks ago I was declaring to the world that Marilyn Manson had gone soft. He was defanged, I said. Watered down. No longer the menacing threat to society he was in the 1990s.
So what happens? He immediately proves me wrong by inspiring a girl to burn down her parents’ house. Or at least that’s what the girl would have us believe.
According to the El Paso Times, Texas resident Christina Paz, 29, set fire to her father’s home on December 27 as an act of revenge on her parents, whom she believed had secretly plotted to kill her on Christmas Day. Paz said she learned of the (apparently failed) murder plot through messages in the music of Manson and Nine Inch Nails, which revealed her parents’ plans to, according to an affidavit, “sodomize her and chop her up with the help of a neighbor.”
Enraged by the revelation, Paz doused her parents’ bed with highly flammable Super Glue and lit it, and then went into another room and set fire to the curtains. According to police reports, she then grabbed her bags, walked outside and waited in the front yard until a police officer arrived.
Fortunately, no one was home at the time – it was later revealed that Paz’s father resides in a nursing home – but the fire did cause an estimated $50,000 in damages. She is now facing a felony arson charge, and remains in jail after failing to post a $20,000 bond.
“I believe this is a cry for help,” Paz’s sister Anna told the Times. “It hurts to see this happen.”
