From April 17-28, celebrate the world-famous Tribeca Film Festival as xfinity.com editor David Onda helps you plan your own festival at home, featuring past and present Tribeca movies now available with XFINITY On Demand.

Of all the films screening at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, few have gotten the early critical acclaim received by “What Richard Did.”

The haunting Irish drama was heaped with honors at the 2013 Irish Film and Television Awards (5 wins, 10 nominations), and earned noms from the Evening Standard British Film Awards and the London Critics Circle Film Awards. Star Jack Reynor, who has been tapped as the leading man for Michael Bay‘s next “Transformers” sequel, particular praise for his stirring performance as the titular Richard.

Directed by Dublin native Lenny Abrahamson, “What Richard Did” is the story of a popular high school senior named Richard (Reynor). An all-star athlete with friends to spare and money to boot, Richard’s future looks bright as he heads into his freshman year of college. But when a wild night of partying leads to an unexpected altercation between Richard and a friend (Sam Keeley), the golden boy commits an unthinkable crime that turns his whole world against him. This film is loosely based on the Kevin Power book “Bad Day in Blackrock.”

The film’s poster boasts powerful quotes from Irish critics, who call it “a riveting drama that defines a generation” (John Maguire, Sunday Business Post), “the most important Irish film of this century (Tara Brady, Irish Times) and “masterful filmmaking” (Paul Lynch, Sunday Times). Here in the United States, writer Leslie Felperin of Variety called the drama a ”low-key but compelling morality tale.”

Why should you see it? Because this movie, as well as Tribeca offerings such as “The English Teacher” and “Greetings from Tim Buckley,” is a perfect example of why film festivals are so important. This is storytelling. These are the movies that enrich the soul, encourage conversation and inspire new views of the world around us, but you won’t see them this weekend in the multiplex next to “G.I. Joe” and “Scary Movie.” These are the movies that inspire the people who make movies, and may very well be the best 90 mins you spend in front of a screen all year. And you can do it at home.

Close out your viewing of Tribeca premieres (and prepare for a week of past Tribeca favorites) with some good ol’ fashioned storytelling in “What Richard Did,” and give us your review on Twitter (tweet your reviews to @XFINITY_TV and @david_onda) and Facebook.
