Giving up 100 calories a day doesn’t mean depriving yourself of the foods you know and love. You can reach your goal weight or just get a little healthier by practicing a few sneaky tricks at mealtime. Nutritionist Elizabeth Somer suggests dressing up a sandwich with mustard over fatty mayonnaise or noshing on two poached eggs instead of frying them in a glob of butter.

With summer weather fast-approaching, grills will be coming out of storage and hamburgers will be the menu item of choice for get-togethers. Don’t deny yourself the juicy favorite, just swap lean ground turkey for beef to cut back on your caloric intake. If red meat isn’t your thing, trade in your fried chicken for a healthier roasted version and enjoy twice the portion.

Reward yourself with something sweet and sensible by opting for regular raisins instead of yogurt covered raisins to shave off up to eight teaspoons of added sugar, choose fresh berries over berry-flavored fruit strips, or cut down to one scoop of ice cream instead two and save you over 100 calories. Shunning soda in favor of carbonated water with a splash of orange juice is a great idea too.

In a effort to help Americans make healthier food choices and to address the obesity epidemic, The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) suggests implementing the following tips for living a healthier life:

- Enjoy your food, but eat less
- Avoid oversized portions
- Make half your plate fruits and vegetables
- Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk
- Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals – and choose the foods with lower numbers
- Drink water instead of sugary drinks

“Helping Americans incorporate these guidelines into their everyday lives is important to improving the overall health of the American people,” said Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “The new Dietary Guidelines provide concrete action steps to help people live healthier, more physically active and longer lives.”
