Report: Rodman rips President Obama

Fri May 10, 9:58 PM UTC

Over the last few months, Dennis Rodman — yes, that Dennis Rodman — has become the unlikely new face of North Korean diplomacy in the United States.

Now the eccentric basketball Hall of Famer says he’s trying to put his unusual friendship with dictator Kim Jong Un to use by parlaying it into the release of Kenneth Bae, a Korean-American man sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in North Korea last week.

On Friday, TMZ caught up with Rodman, who implied that he was just picking up President Obama’s slack when it comes to negotiating Bae’s release. "We got a black president (who) can't even go talk to (Kim)," Rodman told the paparazzo.

"Obama can't do s--t, I don't know why he won't go talk to him."

To answer: It probably has something to do with the fact that the U.S. and the North haven’t had formal diplomatic relations since the Korean War -- and in this case, the U.S. is relying on Swedish diplomats in Pyongyang to communicate with Bae.

But that’s beside the point. Rodman still thinks he can patch things up between North Korea and the rest of the world, and whether he can -- hint: he can’t -- it’s a lot of fun to watch.

It sounds like a joke, but the unpredictable Rodman seems serious — or as serious as he can seem, anyway — and says he’s embarking on the second trip to North Korea on Aug. 1 in search of Bae’s release.
